A Complete Travel Guide to Rishikesh

Rishikesh is located at an elevation of 372 meters above sea level and is part of the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand. Rishikesh has always been a part of ‘Kedarkhand,’ which is today known as Garhwal, according to history. It is supposed that Lord Rama did his penance for killing Ravana here. The mythologically significant Lakshman Jhula, one of the top spots to see in Rishikesh, is where Ram and Lakshman are said to have crossed the mighty River Ganga. In 1889, a jute bridge was replaced by an iron bridge, which had previously been a jute bridge. However, during the floods of 1924, it was swept away.

A sturdy bridge was constructed, and it still stands today. Rishikesh has a lot to offer those interested in adventure. Rishikesh, the location of historic temples such as Bharat Mandir, Shatrughna Mandir, and Lakshman Mandir, is one of India’s most popular pilgrimage destinations. Numerous yoga and meditation institutes have sprung up in the town, catering to the region’s large population of health buffs. Another highlight is the Kailas Ashram Brahmavidyapeetham, a 133-year-old institution dedicated to promoting and preserving Vedantic learning.

Rishikesh is one of India’s most popular adventure and tourist destinations, with activities ranging from white-water river rafting to bungee jumping. Even if you’ve done rafting before, the very prospect of rafting over the mighty Ganges would give you an adrenaline rush. Rappelling, kayaking, hiking, zip line, mountain biking, and rock climbing are some of the other adventure activities available in Rishikesh. There is something for everyone, and Rishikesh will not disappoint any traveler.

Uttarakhand Travel Tourism has put together a Rishikesh travel guide to help you plan an organized visit to the city. It is here that you will find comprehensive information about places to visit, activities to do and shop, places to eat, and how to get there.

History of Rishikesh

“Hrishik+ish, Hrishikesh” is formed when the root words “Hrishik” and “ish” are combined; “Hrishik” means “senses,” and “ish” signifies “master” or “Lord.” As a result, Lord of the Senses or Lord Vishnu is the meaning of the word. Rishikesh is the Hindu god Vishnu’s name, which means “lord of the senses.” Sanskrit is the Sanskrit language. The location is named after Lord Vishnu, who appeared as Lord Hrishikesh to ‘Raibhya Rishi’ as a result of his austerities (Tapasya). Lord Vishnu, the Conqueror of the Senses, was reached by the sage Raibhya after he subdued his senses. As a result, the town is known as Hrishikesh. Later ly, however, it was pronounced Rishikesh. This location is known as Kubjamrak in the Skand Puran because Lord Vishnu arrived here under a mango tree.

Even today, the name “Kubjamrak” is still used in religious rites. Another tradition claims that a huge fire erupted in Rishikesh. Lord Shankar cursed Lord Agni because he was enraged. Lord Agni then prayed here for the forgiveness of his sins. As a result, it is known as Agni Tirth – Lord Agni’s or the Fire God’s holy site of penance. Som Sharma, a sage, did penance and prayed to Lord Hrishikesh Narayan, who was delighted with him and granted him a boon, and thus he obtained Lord Hrishikesh Narayan’s Darshan here.

The Siwalik (outer and lower Himalayan mountains) lie at its feet, the outer-scrape Himalayas encircle it on the north, and the frightened Ganga and Yamuna skirt it on the east and west, respectively. The Ganga enters the district at Tapoban in the eastern Dun and flows south-west to Hardwar via Raiwala near Rishikesh. The Yamuna joins the district in Jaunsar and flows south for about 32 kilometers along the district’s southeast border. Aside from the Ganga and the Yamuna, the district’s rivers include the Asan, Suswa, Tons, Rispana, Bindal, and Amalava.

Only a few people resided here during the Middle Ages. During the trek, the pilgrim stopped by here. Only a few poets and sages called this place home. It was surrounded by mango plantations and bamboo and Ber bushes. During the seventh century, there were numerous temples in this area. Many of them were destroyed by floods in the Ganga, earthquakes, and iconoclasts.
