Gurney House in Nainital

The Gurney house in Nainital was the summer home of famous British hunter, tracker, and naturalist Jim Corbett in the 1800s. Gurney House is now a privately owned property by the Dalmias and serves as a heritage site.

The Gurney House is a cottage located in the lush greenery of Nainital, a 10-minute uphill walk from Mall Road. It was built in 1880 for Jim Corbett, who used to visit the area during the summer. Gurney has several meanings, one of which is a house built from the carted remains of a broken or dismantled house.

The Gurney house was built from the ruins of a demolished house on Alma Hill that was destroyed by a landslide, hence the name. The Gurney house is a cosy, old cottage that has been so naturally preserved that visitors get a sense of how Jim Corbett used to live.

During the summers, Jim Corbett would come to the cottage on his hunt for man-eating animals. Jim Corbett’s prized possessions, such as his trophies, fishing rod, African drum, furniture, and books, are still housed in the cottage. The colonial-style cottage is surrounded on all four sides by a garden and lawn. To visit the Gurney House, you must make an appointment.

The gurney house is 3.7 kilometres from Nainital. The cottage is easily accessible from Nainital’s Mall Road. A 9-kilometre trek from Nainital Mall Road to Gurney House awaits adventurers.
