Dehradun District is named after two words 'dera' signifies home and 'doon' signifies a valley between the Shivaliks and the great Himalayas.
Dehradun 's name is based on Shri Ram Rai, one story tells that the seventh eldest son of the Sikh Guru was Har Rai Ji.
The town is often referred to as the Doon Valley. In the Doon Valley camp or "dera," he and his disciples were assumed to be living and so this Valley became famous.
Dehradun has grown to become a city after 1947 and soon afterwards it received the Clock Tower, its most iconic and central monument.
Building work on Ghanta Ghar's six-sided clock tower began in 1948. Sarojini Naidu laid the foundation for this clock tower.
The tower, also called Balbir Clock Tower, is built in the memory of the local resident Lala Balbir Singh. It was finished in 1953 and the then Minister of Railways, Lal Bahadur Shastri, opened the building.
