History of Binsar

Binsar was once the hunting grounds of Almora’s previous Chand lords. After the British vanquished Nepal and Kumaon became a British ruled zone, the administration’s leading bureaucrats constructed estates in the area. As a result, they helped to safeguard the area from pine plantations (the fate of large parts of Kumaon, including the lower reaches of the present-day Sanctuary).

They also planted orchards in the estates and turned them into their own Shimla for the summer. Following independence, the estates continued to grow fruits until the late twentieth century, when most estates turned their concentration from fruit to hosting visitors.
